St. George, UT- Helen Ruth Jones Shelton, two days shy of her 97th birthday, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at her assisted care residence, Legacy Village, Provo, UT, after living in retirement for 28 years in St. George, Utah.
Ruth was born April 11, 1919, in Provo, UT to Helen and John G. Jones, DDS. She married Fletcher R. Shelton of Lehi, UT, in 1941, where both graduated from Lehi High School. They were sealed in the SLC LDS temple. During WWII, Ruth and Fletcher lived in Oak Ridge, TN. Ruth gave birth to her first child, Bruce, in 1943; second, Ronald, in 1945; third, Kenneth, in 1947; and fourth, Ellen, in 1950.
From 1945-55, Ruth and family lived in SLC, UT, where she enjoyed reunions with the “Oak Ridgers”. From 1955 to 1988 she lived in Provo; and then in St. George. For 60 years she served faithfully in the LDS Church in many callings from cub scouting to ward and stake primary and relief society president. She enjoyed most being with her family and her many friends. She was always positive, well mannered, well dressed and groomed—she was “once, twice, three times a lady,” loved by all who knew her.
Ruth survived her husband, her brother Emery, and three of her four children. She is survived by her son, Kenneth and his wife, Pam, of Provo, UT; by two daughters-in-law, Jayne Shelton of Las Vegas, NV, and Vickie Shelton of St. George, UT; by her “Irish daughter, Clyde Gottfredson, of SLC, and by 18 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 16, with a viewing from 10 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. and memorial service from 11 a.m. to 12:15 in the Green Valley 2nd Ward, LDS Church, 511 S. Valley View Drive, St. George, UT, followed by interment at the St. George cemetery.
